Scooping and Pouring

P R E V I E W
You will need:
  • Dried beans
  • Large spoon
  • 2 large bowls
  • Rice
  • Measuring cup
  • Water
  • 2 small pitchers

Spoon beans from full bowl to empty bowl:  Show the child how to use the spoon to scoop the beans from the full bowl on the left side and pour the beans into the empty bowl on the right side.  Allow the child to spoon beans on his or her own.  If the beans spill, encourage the child to pick them up and put them in the bowl that he or she is filling.

Scoop rice from full bowl to empty bowl:  With the full bowl of rice on the left and the empty bowl on the right, model the correct way to grasp the measuring cup to scoop the rice from the full bowl to the empty one.  Allow your child to scoop the rice with the measuring cup on his or her own.

Pour water from full pitcher to empty pitcher:  Place the full water pitcher on the left and the empty pitcher on the right.  Model the correct way to hold the full pitcher and slowly pour the water into the empty pitcher.  Allow your child to pour the water on his or her own.

Repeat these activities so that your child can practice spooning, scooping, and pouring on his or her own with your supervision to gain confidence in completing these tasks independently.
