Age 2 - Activity 52
Colorful Fishing

P R E V I E W
You will need:
  • Red, orange, yellow, blue, green, purple, brown, and black construction paper
  • Scissors
  • Fish stencil (from internet search)
  • Hole punch
  • 8 paper clips
  • Magnet
  • Yarn
  • Wooden spoon
  • Hot glue gun (optional)

Set up:  Trace the fish stencil and cut out a fish from each color of construction paper so that there is a total of 8 fish for this activity.  Punch a hole in the “nose” of each fish and put a paper clip through each fish.  To make a “fishing pole,” tie or hot glue a magnet to a piece of yarn, which you can tie to a wooden spoon.

Review colors and model fishing:  Show the child one fish of each color and name each color as you place the fish at random in front of the child.  Review each color and ask the child to pick up the color of the fish you name.  Then show the child how to “catch” the fish with the magnet.  Give him or her a chance to practice.

Enrichment ideas:  Work with a small number of fish and instruct the child to catch a certain number of fish (1-5) at a time.  Count the number of fish that were caught and then ask the child how many are left.  Matching stickers, numbers, letters, and words may be used on the fish at different times.  Only use a few fish at first and then gradually add more than 8 fish as the child becomes more confident.
